WHAT IS PAINTBALL?

Paintball is the game where participants use markers (usually avoid the term "gun" not to cause any alarms) driven by compressed air, CO2 or other gases, to shoot small balls filled with paint to other players. In essence it is a complex strategy game in which players hit by paintballs during the game are eliminated from it temporarily, sometimes permanently, depending on the game mode. Contrary to what people ussually think, this is one of the safest outdoor sports.

Normally in a game of paintball two teams try to eliminate all opposing players or complete an objective (such as capturing a flag or eliminating a specific player). A typical non-professional game of paintball usually lasts between five minutes to half an hour. The basic equipment needed to practice paintball is not too expensive (although high-end markers and other equipment can get quite expensive). The number of paintballs fired during a game varies depending on the type of game on the kind of players: some shoot hundreds of paintballs, others a few and some even fail to shoot one paintball throughout the entire game.

Since its birth, paintball has drawn a crowd of casual and permanent players. The Sporting Goods Manufacturer's Association estimates that approximately 10 million Americans annually play paintball.

The paintball games can be played indoors or outdoors and they can take take various modes; some of the more popular are the woodsball and the tournament or speedball. The rules vary widely from one mode to another, with most of them designed for participants to enjoy the game in a safe environment.
